The daily experiences of a final year education student!
Service learning log
“You can’t stop a teacher when they want to do something. They just do it.” ― J.D. Salinger

Proposal
To create awareness of the “BEE POSITIVE”- positivity hive the project will be launch through the senior primary teachers. The projects goals and importance of positivity, kindness and gratitude will be highlighted through a poster that will be distributed among the senior primary phase WhatsApp group chat. The digital poster will be used to emphasise the importance of the themes discussed through this project, as well as the role each grade will play in this project.

The educational aspect of this project is integra to its success. Each grade will be assigned specific colours and a topic that aligns with their level of development:
Grade 4: setting a goal for their future grade 7 self.
Grade 5: ways to show positivity and kindness.
Grade 6: positive affirmations.
Grade 7: something they are grateful for/ something they have learnt from their time at Forest View Primary
School.

To unite learners and encourage collective action, the project will be framed as a phase-wide initiative where every student’s contribution matters. Each class will work together on their hexagons during a designated time, fostering a sense of teamwork and collaboration. To further unite the school, the project will be displayed somewhere on the school grounds where the learners can be reminded daily of ways positivity can be spread. The learners play a crucial role in this project, without the learners designed hexagons the project cannot be completed.
The process
This project started off as blank hexagon templates, that simply had the corresponding prompt at the top per grade. The learners had complete creative freedom when creating their hexagons as long as the required colours were used. Many hours went into cutting and laminating each hexagon, which was then assembled outside the tuckshop area, where the learners could see it every morning, and passing it on their way to assembly.
Why I chose this project- reflection
The Intermediate phase is a vital time in a developing childs life, making it even more important to remind them of positivity and gratitude. I decided to create this positivity hive so that the learners would be reminded every day how kind, beautiful, smart, caring, brave and amazing they are, and that there are so many ways that you can share kindness and positivity with those around you. I got the opportunity to fill in for classess from each grade during my practical this year. I knew immediately after getting to work with all these special children that I wanted them to play a vital role in my social action project. This was by far one of the most challenging teaching experiences I have faced, having to deal with huge life changes I could have never imagined, but the amazing children really became my support system. From the daily flowers I would have picked for me, to the sweet letters I would find on my desk, to a simple "You're doing amazing Miss Dell" during one of my lessons, the children really inspired me and supported me through it all, solidifying that I wanted to do something small as a reminder of how amazing they are and how much they mean to the people around them.

The "BEE POSITIVIE" initiative promoted social awareness through a structure that included the entire senior primary. The digital posters ensured efficient communication with teachers, learners, and parents. The visual display in the classrooms and around the school enhanced engagement and excitement, allowing learners to visualize their role in spreading positivity. Laminating the hexagons added to the project's sustainability, ensuring that it remains a long-lasting reminder of positive values. The project's goal to teach values like kindness and gratitude is likely to have a lasting impact on the school community. Learners not only created something tangible but also took time to reflect on positive aspects of their school life, enhancing their emotional intelligence.

On a personal level, service-learning through this project has helped me develop a deeper understanding of the importance of promoting positivity and kindness within a school environment. The process of organizing and overseeing the project fostered a sense of accomplishment and pride in leading an initiative that promotes these values. I gained empathy by understanding the learners' individual perspectives as they designed their hexagons, which deepened my connection to the students and the school community.

Professionally, this project provided a platform to refine my leadership, organizational, and communication skills. You likely learned how to effectively mobilize learners and teachers and coordinate different aspects of the project. Additionally, the creativity required to design the educational component (e.g., assigning topics by grade) and manage resources likely sharpened your planning skills. The emphasis on collaboration across grades highlighted the importance of teamwork and communication within a school context. I gained new skills through this project such as project management, resource allocation, and fostering engagement among learners with different developmental needs.

The "BEE POSITIVE" project benefits the school by creating a lasting visual representation of positive values that all learners contributed to. It fosters a school-wide culture of gratitude, kindness, and reflection, promoting a more cohesive and supportive environment. Since the project involved minimal external resources and relied heavily on the participation of the school community, it is sustainable. By displaying the hexagons long-term, the school will have a constant reminder of these values, and the initiative could be expanded in the future to include additional classes or themes. The laminated hexagons ensure that the project will endure over time, allowing it to serve as an ongoing educational tool.
